Rise and Shine

With Obama’s announcement of an additional 50 billion dollar initiative to help with the USA’s infrastructure, I recalled how important it is to set aside days, like Labor Day, to remember the value of hard work, whether it is “white collar” or “blue collar.” Everyone needs to feel appreciated as they labor in their respective jobs. Cary Cherniss has written a book entitled Beyond Burnout: Helping Teachers, Nurses, Therapists, and Lawyers Recover from Stress and Disillusionment. Rise and Shine

Jesus was an incredible man. He even emphasized His humanity quite often by referring to Himself as son of man. He seems to have wanted us to know that He could totally empathize and sympathize with our human condition. As a resource for our study of the OT, I’ve been using a book entitled Ancient Israel: A Short History from Abraham to the Roman Destruction of the Temple edited by Hershel Shanks of the Biblical Archaeology Society. The copyright is for 1988, so the material may be somewhat dated, but I’ve found it to be very helpful in illuminating the biblical text. There are only eight chapters beginning with chapters on The Patriarchal Age,Israel in Egypt, and The Settlement in Canaan. It is followed by chapters on The United Monarchy, The Divided Monarchy, Exile and Return and then ending with chapters on The Age of Hellenismand Roman Domination.
