“God is a Spirit; and they that worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth” (Jn. 4:24, ASV).

In this scripture Jesus is explaining that the time and place of worship has changed from what was required of His people in the days of the Old Testament, during patriarchy and the Law
given through Moses. True worship means worshipping Him according to the plan or way that was given by God. This was His commandment when He gave them the Law under patriarchy, where we note that God would not accept the sacrifice Cain had given, which was not according to His instructions to them (Gen. 4:1-8). This was also true under the law given by Moses when the two priests of God, Nadab and Abihu offered a sacrifice that God had not commanded (Leviticus 10:1-7). There can be no question that God has given us a plan for true worship to Him today. Notice that Jesus said to “worship Him in spirit and in truth.” In the beginning of the church which we have recorded in Acts 2, we see that those who were baptized...”continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breading of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). We note that Acts 20:7 that they continued in these items of worship on the first day of the week. We see also from 1 Cor. 16:1-2 that they continued in the fellowship or giving on the first day of the week, the Lord’s Day. We read that they sang, “teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace” in their hearts unto God (Col. 3:16; Eph. 5:19). In addition to this, we note from 1 Cor. 11:17-34 that they were to partake of the Lord’s
Supper in spirit and truth. There was also the preaching of the word, that we are to heed (Rom. 10:8-17). Yes, God has a definite plan and way for us to worship Him today, and by which we must abide (2 Jn. v. 9-10; Matt. 15:9), or our worship is in vain.
