ANOTHER DAY
G. K. Chesterton, the famous English author, when he was a young man, wrote this poem:
Evening
Here dies another day
During which I have had eyes, ears, hands
And the great world round me;
And with tomorrow begins another.
Why am I allowed two?
Have you ever felt that way? Another day of life and breath! Another day of sunshine and beauty! Another day! What a privilege! “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”(Psalm 118:24) Amen!
One of the characteristics of the Psalms is their emotional outpouring. It is true that many of the Psalms are filled with distress and anxieties which the authors are hoping to have God’s help with. But, there are many other times where the psalmist recognizes the many good things God does for us every day! “The lovingkindness of God endures all day long.” (Psalm 52:1b) Let us count our many daily blessings! “My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness and of Your salvation all day long; for I do not know the sum of them.” (Psalm 71:15)
Jesus also taught us that God “causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:45) God gives blessings every day to all men. This kindness toward all men should lead them to Him. Paul puts the question this way: “Or do you show contempt for the riches of His kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?” (Romans 2:4) Like the faithful before us, let us say: “Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever.” (Psalm 145:2)
