PRAYER

“Brethren, pray for us” the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Thess. 5:25, following his admonition to “pray without ceasing” in v. 17. Possibly no one realized the purpose and the power of prayer more than this apostle. His life, like that of Jesus, was filled with prayer.

Prayer is a time when we can have the attention of God our Father as we speak to Him. It is a time when we can pour out our hearts to Him, and cast our every burden upon Him; a time when we can let Him know how much we love and adore Him and offer our thanks and praise to Him for all He has done for us. This is a time when we can let Him know of our care and love for others, the sick, poor, and those about us with sundry problems, seeking mercy and strength for these; a time when we can count our blessings and thank Him for them all. Prayer may be as long as the one that Nehemiah prayed for Israel, “day and night” (Neh. 1:6), or as short as the instant when he stood before the king and prayed (Neh. 2:4). Our prayers should be spoken to God in the name of Christ (John 15:16; 16:23, 24), and always according to the will of God our Father. “The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in it’s working” (James 5:16).
