WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
When we come to worship God on the Lord’s Day, God
is to be worshipped. Jesus said, “God is a Spirit; and
they that worship Him, must worship Him in spirit and
truth.” (John 4:24).
While preaching in Colorado Springs,
CO, I received a note concerning a member of the
church of Christ that had moved to town. When I went
to visit her, she told me that she had been attending a
church just down the street because it had such pretty
windows! While a building may have many attractive
features, none of these should be the real reason for
attending church in that place. It takes no stretch of the
imagination as to what her eyes and mind were on while
she ‘worshipped God’ in that beautiful building! Thinking
back on that incident made me think of these lines
that I found titled: “What Makes a Great Church” Not
soft seats and subdued lights, but strong and courageous
leadership. Not the tall towers with chimes and
bells, but the lofty vision of the people. Not a big budget,
but big hearts. Not the amount of finances received,
but the amount of services rendered. Not the large
membership, but God’s presence, direction and power.
Not what has been done in the past, but what is being
done now, and will do tomorrow. and I would like to add
one more... Not whether it pleases the people, but
whether it stays with the Word of God and pleases Him
(1 Tim. 4:1-5), and as the apostle Paul further admonishes
in 2 Tim. 4:2-4, “Preach the word; be urgent in
season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all
long-suffering and teaching. For the time will come when
they will not endure sound doctrine; but having itching
ears will heap unto themselves teachers after their own
lusts; and will turn away their ears from the truth and
turn aside unto fables.”
Love you, David V. Fultz
