THE POWER OF THE WORD
On the night of His betrayal by Judas Iscariot, Jesus had
gone into the Garden of Gethsemane with His other disciples.
Judas entered the garden, bringing a great multitude
with swords and staves to take Him.
Peter wanted
to defend Jesus by the use of a sword, but Jesus told
him, “Put up again thy sword into its place; for all they
that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Or thinkest
thou that I cannot beseech the Father and He shall even
now send me more than twelve legions of angels” (Matt.
26: 52). When we think of one angel of Jehovah (2 Kings
19:35), who killed one hundred and eighty five thousand
in one night, think what “more than ten thousand” angels
could do. Note what the writer of Hebrews tells us, “For if
the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and
every transgression and disobedience received a just
recompense of reward; how shall we escape, if we neglect
so great a salvation? Which having been first spoken
by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that
heard...” (Heb. 2:2,3). When we take up “the sword of
the Spirit, which is the word of God; ..with all supplication,
praying, at all seasons in the Spirit...” as the apostle
Paul instructs us, (Eph. 6:17, 18), we will win souls to
Christ, and save our own if we abide by it. Through more
than 65 years of preaching the word publicly and privately,
I have found that the best way we are going to win souls
to Christ is by “handling aright the Word of truth” (2 Tim.
2:15). And that more souls are being won by what we call
personal evangelism than any other way (Acts 8:4). If we
want to see the church grow today, we must go with the
gospel as they did in New Testament times. We must go
into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature
(Mark 16:15,16). The power to save souls for Christ is in
the Word!
